There are few things harder as a parent than watching your teenager go through something painful and realizing you can’t fix it for them.

Our instinct is to jump in.

Give advice. Solve the problem. Tell them what we think they should do.

But as our kids get older, sometimes that isn’t what they need from us.

Sometimes our job is simply to make sure they know they don’t have to do the hard thing alone.

In my newest video, I’m talking about what support can look like when your teenager is facing a difficult decision or going through something you can’t make better.

One of the most powerful things we can tell them is:

“I know this is hard. I trust you to figure it out, and whatever you decide, I’m still right here.”

And then we have to mean it.

We have to be willing to sit with them in the hard parts without becoming one more voice in their head telling them what they should do.
